Maximizing Profits for Garage Sales
Budgeting, Money, Saving | November 19, 2009 at 1:05 amSelling junk is not only about clearing your house off all clutter. You can make good profits too when you follow some clever strategies. If you are making $100 of your garage sales, with some careful thinking and sales tactics you can expect to make three times the amount you are making now. If you don’t want to take my word for it, listen to Cathy Pedigo, who authored “How to Have Big Money Garage Sales”. If you follow her advice you can earn more than three times the money you are earning on your present junk sales or garage sales as you may popularly know.
Firstly in order to get a good sale, you need to impress your customers. Just collecting the junk and piling up in the garage is not going to fetch you a good price. If you want the junk to fetch a good price, don’t let it look like junk in the first place. Wipe off that dust on those old pieces of furniture and keep them spic and span. Clean any sovereigns, and make small repairs in clothes etc. Present all items in a good condition. The way you organize them in the garage also makes a big difference. Instead of dumping them in the storage area, neatly place them on shelves. You’ve got to work on
the garage sales with the mind of a marketer and see how best you can push sales of your ware at maximum profit. During the recession recovery period extra income such as, from the garage sales is going to help you out very much.
In order to make your garage sales a huge hit, you need to plan for it before hand. It’s not as simple as you might think. First you need to collect all the items that you don’t need and then put them in the garage. More often you might forget things that you need to put in the garage and then hold another sale for that once again. Another thing that might happen is that you might wrongly estimate the amount of time you’d need for planning and executing the sale. Most of us are busy during weekdays and leave the planning for the weekends. But most often it is seen that just a couple of days is not enough for planning. Plan at least one week ahead. You need not spend time on working days for planning the garage sales but you can spend some time on a weekend just a week before the intended sales date. Collect all the items that you’d like to sell off at leisure. To get maximum publicity, put a banner about the sales in front of your house and also distribute leaflets at nearby malls and other public places so that people come to know about it.
Lastly, watch out for the legal rules of your area. Don’t sell things that have been banned like toys etc. If you have to obtain any special permits for this please do so before you start off with the actual sales to avoid hassles.

I absolutely agree on the preparation and planning! I am a huge garage sale fanatic, love shopping and hosting garage sales. I usually spend about 4 weeks preparing for my sale, I have kids so I always have a lot of stuff to sell! At my last sale, I made $1000 and the year before that $1300.
Make sure your items are nice and presented in an attractive manner. Be sure to advertise, I always put an ad in my local paper which is where most of my customers come from. You can also put out flyers, tell all of your friends (online and off:), craig’s list or other online community sites.
I have some down-loadable garage sale pricing sticker templates at my site:
